The EMC, EAG and NoAH ReGen have joined forces to alleviate human stressors and promote the resilience of critical ecosystem services within the AOI. In late 2022, the EMC used data and knowledge derived from various ecological surveys, primary and government stakeholder interviews, observations of human uses, as well as current and future impacts affecting the area to develop the Nonsuch Bay Integrated Marine Management Strategy. In turn, the EAG developed the Offshore Island Nature Reserve (OSINR) Technical Feasibility Study.
Guided by a multi-pronged approach including site assessments, stakeholder consultations and a rapid willingness-to-pay study, the EAG’s study identifies the stakeholder needs, current uses and public perceptions on natural resource governance within the area. Furthermore, Noah ReGen has been working alongside the Department of Environment and other governmental stakeholders to implement the Blue Resurgence Program, an initiative which aims to support the government’s Maritime Blue Economy Plan to build a comprehensive ridge-to-reef strategy that promotes coastal restoration, community well-being, and economic growth.
While Noah Regen’s efforts are currently focused on Barbuda’s Codrington Lagoon, they have an interest in expanding their efforts to the NEMMA and hope to apply their expertise to support this pilot initiative.
1) Determine the financial resources necessary to implement effective management in the AOI based on proposed zones, current legislation and stakeholder uses identified within the IMMS and OSINR Feasibility Study
2) Assess the carbon potential in the area and provide a roadmap for the implementation of blue and green carbon projects
3) Identify other revenue streams that could support the local conservation efforts
4) Explore new conservation techniques and/or explore new AOI and provide capacity building when needed to local stakeholders
5) Connect with local communities to build a long-term strategy that will both benefit community and environment
6) Liaise with government to provide enough data to encourage supporting the NEMMA
